5 Key Skills I Gained Through Micro-Credentials That Got Me Hired in Marketing

When I began my job search for a marketing position, I immediately noticed that there were numerous applicants. Several of them had excellent degrees and experiences, and I was somewhat bewildered. That’s when I learned about micro-credentials. I did not realize then that these tiny badges would transform my career and land me my dream job.

What are Micro-Credentials?

Allow me to define what micro-credentials are before I set off on my quest. Put simply, micro-credentials are short, specialized certificates that verify you have skills in a specific area. Unlike degrees, which take years to earn, micro-credentials are usually achievable in weeks or days. Micro-credentials are meant to allow people to learn and prove specialized skills that are highly relevant to the contemporary job market.
For example, I took a short course in digital marketing analytics that took about 10 hours of my time. At the end of it, I was awarded a digital badge that I could put on my LinkedIn profile and résumé, advertising my new skill to prospective employers.

Here are the five key skills I gained through micro-credentials that ultimately helped me secure a position in the marketing field.

Data Analysis

In this world of data, marketing professionals must understand data analysis in order to make smart decisions. I learned to read complex sets of data and create insightful conclusions through a micro-credential in data analytics. This skill set made me a desirable interview candidate.

Example: During a mock interview, I was asked how I would analyze customer engagement through social media metrics. I explained confidently how I would use analytics software to monitor likes, shares, and comments and translate those numbers into successful marketing strategies. My interviewers were impressed, and I knew my micro-credential played a key role in my data awareness.

Upon completion of my SEO micro-credential, I created a simulated marketing strategy for a fictional startup to assist in getting them noticed on the web. I described how I would improve their blog, repair their website structure, and utilize keywords effectively. I spoke about what I had learned from the micro-credential, how I utilized project management tools like Trello to map out progress and keep team members informed. This story showed my ability to coordinate and my enthusiasm for leading projects, which was a major factor underlying my decision to employ.
